Stage 1:  Objectives

MHS-S4C1-11 Solve problems using sine, cosine, and tangent ratios of the acute angles of a right triangle.

Goal:  Solve the angles of a right triangle.

Essential Questions:

  • What is a triangle?
  • What is an acute angle?
  • What are sine, cosine, and tangent?
  • When are these trigonometric functions used in daily life?

Enduring Understanding:

Understanding sine, cosine, and tangent can help you...
  • Build structures
  • Throw a ball
  • Plant a garden
  • Play billiards/pool

Students will know how to solve the angle of a triangle using sine, cosine, and tangent.

Students will be able to determine the final position of a ball in a game of pool.

Stage 2:  Assessment

Performance Task:

Students will estimate the height of an object using shadows and angles of elevation.

Students will measure a persons height and length of their shadow, then use tangent to calculate the angle of elevation to the sun.  They will repeat this process with another student of a different height to find that the angle of elevation is the same for each person.  Using this knowledge, students will measure the length of the shadow of an object on campus (tree, building, goal post, basketball hoop,) then estimate the height of the object.

Other Evidence:

Students will record measurements from angle of elevation activity and report their thought processes.

A daily journal will be kept where students explain what was learned the day before and how it relates to previous concepts learned in the unit.
