Insult Bombs

For some reason my kiddos are obsessed with my appearance and my personal life.  They are also extremely inconsiderate and rude when talking about their two obsessions.  The good thing is that they're just high schoolers and I know you can't take anything they say to heart.  Here are some of the wonderful things they've said to me:

  • "My mom always wears sweaters like yours.  I think they're so ugly."
  • To an aide, "finally, I get to work with a teacher I actually like."  To me, "don't worry, you are my second favorite teacher in the room"
  • "You're so fashionable this year.  Last year you looked ratchet all the time.  We would look at you and be like, 'you know she didn't even try today.'  Seriously, you'd wear these big baggy cardigan's all the time."
  • "Ms. Sansom, you never match"
  • "Hey Miss, what would you do if there was this girl that liked you, but you didn't like her back....wait, never mind.  You're not the type of person that dates.  I'll ask someone else."
  • "Do you have a boyfriend now?  Lately you've been getting ready and your outfits match"
  • "I like to imagine that you just have songs about math on your iPod."
  • "You have friends?!  I didn't know you had friends!"
I guess my goal of teaching my students to be decent, kind human beings hasn't really played out quite yet.

I found this in another teacher's room and thought it was hilarious.  The level of talent in desk art has skyrocketed this year.  I am quite impressed.

Questions

These are the questions my students have asked me today:

"Are you single?"

"Why don't any boys at the gym ask you out?"

"Have you ever been in love?"

Notice a common trend? When I told a freshman I was going to Iron Man tonight I was instructed to wear jeans and a nice top and curl my hair. Apparently my T-town t-shirt and polygamist braid (as Stacie so kindly calls it) are not very attractive. If I want to get a little crazy I can wear a summer dress, but not my khaki pencil skirt or any other professional skirt. If I follow these directions, a guy might just say hi at the movie theater. I am getting dating advice from 14 year olds. Awesome.

Also, they're all obsessed with me working out after this picture surfaced. Super awesome #swag

GCF

In college my friends would always make fun of me because there's not a "type" of guy that I date.  They all seem to be very different.  All great ideas and "ah-ha" moments seem to come in the shower.  At almost every dance practice, one of my girls starts a a sentence with, "I was in the shower and I realized/thought/insert-some-other-word..."  I've also been working on factoring at school for over a month (side note:  I'm about to go insane!  Tomorrow is the unit exam on quadratics.  Hallelujah!)  For you mathletes out there, the hardest thing has been that darn greatest common factor.  Let's take a minute to put together those two random thoughts.

I was in the shower and I realized that there is a greatest common factor among everyone I've dated.  Let's take a look:

Grew up on a farm, drives a truck, wears Wranglers.
Likes to cook, handyman, drives a truck, travels for work.
Drives a truck, lives in Logan, works on a boat, studied plants.
Travels everywhere, plays lacrosse, has a bun, drives a truck.
Fast runner, plays lacrosse, drives a truck, lives in Logan.

Taking these five terms into consideration, you can see that each term has one thing in common.  Many of them have similar factors, but there is only one that is common among all terms.  The greatest common factor is "drives a truck".  If you were to factor out the GCF, you would be left with the remaining terms.

So there you have it, I guess a truck is all it takes to get my interest.  I must have a sixth sense that helps me find them.  I was never aware I liked trucks so much until that light bulb moment in the shower.

Will Smith - REMIX

I cannot wait for May, and that's not because it's my birthday, the end of my first year of teaching, or because I will be getting ready to return to the holy land for the summer (aka the great state of Utah).  I cannot wait for May because we are starting Trigonometry in Accelerated Algebra, which means I am lucky enough to share this gem with my class:

We had professional development today and talked about multiple intelligences.  You would expect a math teachers "strongest" intelligence to be logic, but mine was music.  Maybe that's why I feel like the only way to teach math is by singing, chanting, and rapping.

Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....Gettin triggy wit it.
